# What is an AI accelerator?

An AI accelerator is any chip purpose-built to run artificial intelligence workloads: GPUs, custom silicon designed by cloud providers, and specialized inference processors. Accelerators are the core of AI capital spending, and every one deployed pulls through memory, networking, power, and cooling purchases across the rest of the supply chain.

## Why it matters to an AI investor

The accelerator layer is where competition is fiercest and headlines loudest, but supplier layers around it often carry steadier economics: a foundry or memory maker is paid whichever accelerator wins. Watching accelerator roadmaps and custom-chip programs shows where each hyperscaler's spending is heading.

### Why do cloud providers design their own AI accelerators?

To cut cost and reduce dependence on a single vendor. At hyperscaler scale, even a modest per-chip saving justifies a custom silicon program, and in-house chips can be tuned to the provider's own workloads. Custom accelerators now account for a meaningful share of AI compute, largely for internal and inference use.
